Dead Sea Salt Learning Center
Important: Beware of “processed” or “washed” salts. Many vendors will often claim to sell real Dead Sea bath salts when they are actually selling plain table salt or those that have already had minerals extracted from them. Compared to the real thing which looks off-white, this salt usually looks bleached and extremely white. When you buy your Dead Sea salts, make sure the vendor provides you with a pledge that the salt has the highest mineral concentrate available (listed on the chart below). A company that is 100% confident that they are shipping you truly 100% genuine product will usually not hesitate to include a certificate of authenticity to back up their claims (like we do at Cleopatra's Choice with the Adovia salts). This ensures that you are purchasing the best possible and the most genuine Dead Sea salt. Also remember that the salt from the southern end of the Dead Sea has the most concentrated mineral content. When you purchase Adovia Dead Sea salt, we provide you with a certificate of authenticity with every order.
What are the benefits of the Adovia brand?
There are many benefits to bathing in baths with these salts. Some of these benefits have been documented through clinical research while others have been reported to us from customers using the salts:

How do I use the salts?Using the salts is easy, simply pour the desired amount into your bath tub and allow them to dissolve fully. Then soak for about 20 to 30 minutes and rinse off. Feel free to light a candle and take in your favorite book. The reason you want to rinse after using the salts is that your skin will be deep cleansed and toxins will be pulled out of your skin so you want to be sure to rinse all that off. As for how much amount to use, that can vary depending on what you are using the bath salts for. If you are using the salts to get relief from a skin condition such as Psoriasis or Eczema about one pound for a regular size bath tub is recommended. If you don't have a skin condition and are using the salts to just have more moisturized, softer skin, then about one half to one measuring cup should be enough (about 1/4 to 1/2 pound). A lot of this depends on your personal results and preference, you can try different amounts of the salt, up to the amounts we recommend and find what works for you. The same goes for frequency of the baths.
What is the difference between Fine Grain and Coarse Grain Dead Sea salt?
Genuine and pure Dead Sea bath salts are usually only available in two grain sizes - Coarse Grain and Fine Grain. There is no difference between the two grain sizes other than just that - the size of the grains. It's the same exact salt other than the size. The Fine Grain, due to being smaller can dissolve a bit faster which is nice because it can mean that your bath will stay warmer longer after you get in. There is no difference in the mineral content or therapeutic properties between the two grain sizes.
What are the minerals in the salts and what do they do?
There is a reason why salt from the Dead Sea is much more expensive than regular sea salt from any other sea or ocean in the world. The reason is the very high concentration of mineral present in the salt. While regular sea salt is about 90% Sodium (which accounts for it's salty taste), salt extracted from the waters of the Dead Sea is only about 10% Sodium with the other 90% accounting for other minerals which are essential for proper skin function, but which are present in very small quantities in regular sea salt. So what are these minerals exactly and what do they do? Many of the twenty one minerals are present in trace form, however the six minerals listed below are prevent in much larger concentration. Below we go over what each mineral's general biological function is:
Magnesium Chloride: Stimulates protein synthesis. This allows for quicker natural regeneration of healthy skin tissue. Essential for skin cell metabolism, this also provides some anti-allergic and anti-inflamatory benefits. Also vital in helping the cells process other nutrients and vitamins.
Potassium Chloride: Assists the cells in expelling waste and toxins. Potassium is also a major factor in regulating muscle function and the nervous system. Allows the skin to properly maintain an optimal moisture balance to reduce over drying or overoilyness. Signs of potassium deficiency include abnormally dry, patchy skin as well as the the opposite extreme - oily skin and acne.
Sulfur: Sulfur is an essential mineral for enabling cells to breathe oxygen as well as convert toxins into non toxic particles. The presence of sulfur is vital to the synthesis of collagen - an important compound for skin health.
Sodium Chloride: Sodium plays a detoxifying role, allowing cells to expel toxins by converting them into waste. Also essential for the absorption of other nutrients.
Bromide: Has natural anti-biotic properties and helps with the rebuilding of cell in the body.
Zinc: Facilitates skin renewal and stimulates collagen and elastin synthesis. Has some anti-inflamatory and natural uv ray blocker properties.
Calcium: Plays an important roll in cell protection as well as cell membrane permeability, thereby allowing for better absorption of nutrients.
It is unfortunate that this question must even be asked, however due to the greed of some unscrupulous vendors, it is important to understand how to tell if the bath salts you buy are really salts from The Dead Sea and not regular sea salt. Some vendors may even sell a combination of sea salt and Dead Sea salt in order to reduce their cost and increase their profit. At Cleopatra's Choice and other reputable vendors you will receive a Certificate of Authenticity when you buy Dead Sea salt. However, there are a couple of other ways to double check. First of all, since salt from the Dead Sea contains much less sodium than regular sea salt, it does not taste very "salty". In fact it tastes almost bitter. You can try a grain or two and check the saltiness level. If it's very salty, like table salt then you may not have the real thing. Please note, we do not recommend eating Dead Sea salt beyond this simple taste test, we only recommend it for bathing or for making salt scrubs. Another way to tell, but a bit tougher is to look at the color of the salt. Genuine Dead Sea salt is a very slight off color white. If your salts looks "bleached" white then it may not be 100% pure and genuine.
More about the Dead Sea:
Located in between Israel and Jordan, and split almost evenly between the two neighboring countries, The Dead Sea is considered one of nature's miracles. It was formed around 3 million years ago and has been a legendary body of water since ancient times. In fact Aristotle, the great Greek philosopher and historian wrote about the sea and the famous Egyptian Queen Cleopatra had cosmetics factories built on the shores of the magical sea to harness it's salt, mud and minerals in the production of soap and dead sea cosmetics - much the same as is done today. The sea is mentioned many times in the Old and New Testaments of the Bible and most major religious texts.
The Dead Sea, located at the lowest point on Earth, is one of the saltiest bodies of water in the world. Compared to regular sea or ocean salt which contains only about 3% salt vs water, the Dead Sea contains 33% mineral salt. In fact this level of salinity creates one of the most amazing effects that visitors marvel at when they make a trip to the sea - a person swimming in the sea can not sink! Yes, when you go into the waters of the sea, you actually float as if you were on an air mattress, but naturally. Today many people who are seeking treatment for skin conditions such as Psoriasis, Eczema and other diseases take a medical tourism trip to the sea and get relief from soaking in the mineral salts waters of the sea as well as lathering themselves with Dead Sea mud.

Here are just a few of customer reviews that we have received from customer who have used our Dead Sea salts:
"I saw the CNN special report on these salts and was skeptical. The media tends to over sensationalize things so I wasn't sure if their report about dead sea salt helping with psoriasis also was exaggerated. However for 10 bucks I figured it was worth giving the salt a try and I'm the kind of person who utilizes the return policy fully if I don't feel I got what promised. So I figured, nothing to loose - I'll give it a try. I got the dead sea salt and didn't have a chance to start using it till about 2 weeks later. Once I used them I was very surprised. Immediately after my first bath (I used about 2 cups worth in the bath) my psoriasis was less pronounced, had less redness and irritation. Believe me when I tell you the difference was VERY noticeable! This was very surprising because what I saw on tv was actually very much a "it remains to be seen" kind of thing. Not to be too ironic but after about a week of using the salts (bath every other day), my Psoriasis did not "remain to be seen", lol. It was almost fully gone! I'm a 52 year old man who has had psoriasis almost all my life and have tried everything from prescriptions to changing my diet. This is the first thing that actually worked, and I can proudly say I am no longer a skeptic. Instead I find myself being almost an promoter for you guys (Cleopatras Choice) whenever old friends ask me why I seem so much more cheerful. Psoriasis is a very unpleasant condition - psychologically and people around me have noticed that I'm in better spirits because I feel better!" - Tom, Minneapolis
"I absolutely love my Adovia salts from Cleopatras Choice. I use the muscle version which has some essential oils added and smells wonderful! (although my husband doesn't like the scent, but I think he's nuts :) I really enjoy taking baths now more and more as I've found it's an inexpensive way to pamper myself. My skin really looks and feels so soft after I get out of the bath, it's really great. Taking some time out for myself and relaxing in these bath salts is wonderful and I wouldn't trade it for the world." - Joy, Long Island, NY
"Love the bath salts! Like having a little mini Dead Sea in my bathtub (except the floating on top of the water part ;) " - Kim, Jacksonville, FL
"I initially found Cleopatras Choice because I purchased their mud soap on amazon. Then I searched around and found this website and tried their Dead Sea mud and a 2 pound jar of the salt. I got the lavender scent and it was wonderful! These bath salts relax me so well at night, I really sleep like a baby now after I take one of these baths. My skin looks better and I feel better and best of all it's a really enjoyable experience. I wish I had known about Dead Sea bath salt a long time ago, I really like them. Thanks for the fast shipping too, I got them in 3 days after ordering (I live in Arizona). - Jackie, Tucson, AZ
"I've had severe eczema ever since I was about 2 years old. From what I've read it's supposed to go away once a person reaches a certain age, but unfortunately for me, mine did not! Your dead sea bath salts really helps reduce the itching and make my skin less irritated. It's the first thing I've tried that has actually helped and I'm forever grateful to you Sharon for bringing these salts to the U.S. I definitely don't have the money that people spend to actually go to the dead sea, so I'm very grateful to be able to buy the salt from you. Talk to you soon!" - Vera, Canton, OH
"I live in the area so I come and pick up my salts from the Cleopatras Choice warehouse personally. I told the owners how well the salt from the Dead Sea has worked for my psoriasis and they asked me to write a review for the website, which I'm more than happy to do. This is the real deal folks, these salts do work like they say they do and I highly recommend them. The flakes just seem to fall right off into the bath tub and it's a little freaky looking, but it's better than having the skin flakes on my skin! the redness also gets reduced when you bathe and most importantly the itching and irritation gets reduced. I can finally sleep through the night without sleeping pills, since my skin is not bothering me and irritating me. The folks at Cleopatras Choice are top notch people to deal with and really actually care about us as customers." - Jim, N. Hollywood, CA
Salts From The Promised Land Helps Psoriasis Patients
The text below refers to a study of the results of using Dead Sea Salts on patients suffering from psoriasis. Fifty patients, aged between 14 and 77 years were treated with the bath salts in a controlled way. Treatment consisted of partial or total baths. For a total bath, 2 kgs (4.5lbs) of the salts were dissolved in a bath at a temperature of 27°C. The partial baths were made with a concentration of about 10%. The baths lasted for 20 minutes and afterwards the skin was thoroughly rinsed with running water. The effect is enhanced when the patient remains in a warm packed condition for one hour after the bath.
The study provided 3-4 baths in the water enriched with the salt from the sea for a period of 3 weeks. The results show that most symptoms of the Psoriatic skin condition were reduced within one week of treatment, notably itch, scaling joint complaints, and the falling asleep and sleep through difficulties. Other factors of the skin condition such as rate of spread, degree of redness and irritation of the skin also were reduced, albeit at a somewhat slower pace. Overall reduction of the symptoms was consistent and the four week treatment regimen left the study participants almost completely free from complaints they previously reported by using Dead Sea salt.
The doctor conducting the Dead Sea salt research concluded and pointed out the fact that from the patients' perspective the biggest and most noticeable difference came from the immediate and quick relief from irritating problem associated with Psoriasis such as skin itching. This in turn help provide a respite from problems with sleeping which a majority of the patients reported and experienced prior to the Dead sea salt bath treatments. The drastic decrease in scaling within one week can be interpreted by physician and patient alike as a further proof of the course outlined above: Healing was total in 27 patients (54%), whereas in 22 cases there was a marked impressive improvement. Tolerance was excellent in all 50 cases. Absolutely no side effects to the salt treatment were reported by patients - whether dermatological or otherwise.
